Language as an Equalizer Workshop

Description: 1 day training for professionals working with LEP persons.

The influx of immigrants and refugees has created an increasing need for culturally and linguistically appropriate services. Any human services institution serving the LEP community will benefit from this training. The goal of this training is to increase awareness about the impact of language barriers in the lives of the LEPs, as well as the balance sheet of the institution.

In the United States there are approximately 25.3 million people that are considered Limited English Proficient (LEP) who experience worse outcomes in healthcare than any other demographic. Healthcare providers and patients are often unaware of the impact of language barriers in patient safety, they tackle such barriers in informal ways often causing more harm than good. Often, they would use untrained interpreters, mobile devices, family members, or their own limited language skills in order to communicate. These practices represent an unequal treatment to the LEP patients because they often take the communicative autonomy away from them.

To offer equal access to healthcare and improve outcomes for individuals and institutions, the language barriers most be overcome in a multidisciplinary, multileveled way. We need to focus in improving the quality of service for the LEP persons by CLAS standards, demanding high quality linguistic services, and by including the interpreter in the model of a multidisciplinary healthcare team

Our Language as an Equalizer workshop provides an overview of the healthcare system when language is a factor, discusses the challenges faced by LEP patients, providers, and institutions with a specific focus in mental health; delves into the intricacies behind the provision of language services, including in-effect laws, and CLAS standards; and offers strategies about how to work with on-site, and remote interpreters. By the end of the workshop participant will have enough information to design a preliminary language access plan for their organizations if they don’t have one.

The Community Interpreter Training ®(TCI)

Description: 40 hour training for interpreters that want to serve the community in medical, educational, and social services settings. This is a standard training created by Cross Cultural Communication LLC. Equal Access Language Services is a licensed trainer of the TCI.

This training includes the interpreters’ code of ethics, modes of interpreting, the role of the interpreter, language access laws in the United States as well as practical exercises. The future interpreter will have to take a language assessment before joining the course.

Join the fastest growing profession

Interpreting is the fastest growing profession in the United States of America with an 19% projected growth to the year 2028. We are excited to create a virtual classroom for the new professionals, those who share our vision of equality and equal access to public services in a culturally diverse environment. You will receive 40 hours of basic interpreter training.

To ensure a great outcome, candidates are encouraged to take a language proficiency test prior to taking the class.

If not available, or possible, candidates should place at the 3rd level in the ILR scale at least.

Some of the topics covered during the training are: Interpreter certification, code of ethics, modes of interpreting, the role of the interpreter, language access laws in the United States as well as practical exercises.

Serve the community

This training will prepare you to serve the community in medical, educational, and social services settings.
